I had just a few minutes on my last day in DC to spend the $10 from One Large—my pledge to fulfill the project and interrupt the mighty flow of money that goes to white-owned businesses (I love that aspect of the project—it's subversive).
The gallery web site promised baskets, jewelry, masks, and "home textiles." When I got to the shop, there were stacks of beautiful fabrics in back. The woman behind the counter pulled down one after another when I asked. I would almost decide, and then see a different gorgeous piece of cloth. I must have spent at least an hour in the store. Finally I settled on this simple graphic pattern. I plan to hang it in my bedroom.
