I brooded over where to invest my $10 until the very last moment. I was in transition, moving from Charlottesville, Virginia, where I intended to spend the $10, to Brooklyn, N.Y., where I knew it would be easy to spend it.
My original plan was to go to a French bakery/cafe in Charlottesville owned by a biracial gay couple. But I know them well, and that felt too easy. I poked around and couldn't find another black-owned business in that small town. Or, it was hard to find out whether a business was black-owned.
When I moved to Brooklyn, my first night out was at a restaurant called Peaches. I love the place. When I found it on the black-owned businesses web pages, I decided I would have a special meal here in my new neighborhood to complete my participation in One Large.
