When I participated in this challenge I knew where I was going to spend my $10. Ten dollars buys the best falafel in Minneapolis at Afro Cafe, a nonprofit started by northern African immigrant, Abdirahman Kahin, four years ago. Kahin founded Afro deli as a convenient alternative to "fast food" where the community could find the fresh halal dishes of their homelands. The food is prepared in a brightly painted space with a welcoming patio out front, where I enjoyed my sandwich in the warm spring sun. In addition to allowing immigrants, students, and native Minneapolitians to enjoy tasty meals, Afro Cafe reinvests in the community, donating proceeds from all purchases to community centers and local programs. The African Development Center, located adjacent to the deli, played a big role in supporting Kahin when he first started the business. Now the deli is thriving and has expanded to a second location in St. Paul.
