I've been going to Sky's, in my neighborhood, since they opened almost 20 years ago. I think of them as the originators of the fusion gourmet taco. I've always associated the place with warmth, spiffiness, and fearless application of dollops of sour cream to balance the dense house sassy sauce—also liberally and deliciously applied.
Coming here with the One Large bill in hand and the project in mind was a chance to eat in and reread the press on the walls, including a Jonathan Gold review from 1998 that notes our stretch of Pico as gentrifying. I feel grateful for the women here who have built a sustainable, inclusive business that has weathered the perils of gentrification, and of small restaurant ownership. That they continue is heroic; may they continue long into the 21st century.
